Surprise Police seeks public input as they consider to buy and use drones
SURPRISE, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- Surprise Police is looking for feedback from residents, as they consider the purchase and operation of drones.
According to a statement released Monday, officials say the drones will help police officers in traffic collision and crime scene reconstruction, critical incidents, search and rescue missions, and special event security. The drones will feature photography and videography capabilities, live feed, and night vision.
Officials say the drone program will be required to operate within FAA guidelines, which restricts them to a maximum altitude of 400 feet, as well as other restrictions that prevents them from being deployed or operated from a moving vehicle, and requiring that a pilot maintain line of sight with the drone at all times.
The estimated cost of the program, according to the city's website, is $65,000, and includes the cost of purchasing multiple drone units, along with training. The program will be funded by the police department's asset forfeiture account.
Public comments can be submitted on the city's website.
