Suspected impaired driver in custody after deadly semi crash

A woman was killed and a second woman seriously hurt after a terrible crash involving a semi, a truck and a passenger vehicle near 28th Drive and Cactus. A driver, suspected of being impaired, has been arrested in the deadly crash.

Phoenix Police say a vehicle was heading east on Cactus and appeared to be going too fast and ran a red light. The vehicle collided with another car, which was pushed into a large truck that was waiting to turn.

Phoenix Fire crews responded to the scene at 1:15am. Crews say two women in their thirties were rushed to the hospital with multiple trauma injuries. One woman was pronounced dead, and a 23-year-old woman has life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi, a 45-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

The driver who ran the red light, 26-year-old Randall Nelson, is suspected of being impaired in the accident. Police are investigating what led up to the deadly crash. Nelson is facing charges of negligent homicide, endangerment, and aggravated assault.
