Victim killed in sinkhole identified

QUEEN CREEK - A farm worker -- identified by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies as 62-year-old Guadalupe Nila -- passed away after falling into a sinkhole. Family members describe the victim was a hard worker who loved his family.

Flowers were left at the scene where the irrigation worker lost his life Friday afternoon after falling into a sinkhole. Family members of the Queen Creek man did not want to go on camera, but they gave us photos of the gentleman, who they say was a great father.

The accident happened at a farm near Ocotillo and Power Road. Nila was an irrigation worker, and the water was typically on all day and all night. Hundreds of thousands of gallons that were left in the field, and when the sinkhole happened there was a small berm of dirt between the sinkhole and the irrigation area, and it left a weak spot like a raging river. MCSO deputies say he was pulled down 18 feet. His body was not recovered until late Friday night, and investigators are unsure how this incident happened.

Deputies say surveyors out and determined why there was a sinkhole, saying it was very soft land. MCSO says this incident is not being ruled suspicious.
