WATCH: Massive schoolyard brawl caused by gangs
A massive fight broke out on campus at Sylmar High School in San Fernando Valley. Reports say tensions were flaring between students following an altercation at the weekend prom. It took a team of 12 officers 20 minutes to break up the fight involving over 40 students. Students believe gang violence caused the fight.
One student was quoted saying, 'These kids that are supposedly the Gang Bangers are coming here to recruit people and they harass us. I don't know why but it's the way the cookie crumbles.'
Parents are outraged that the school was not able to keep their children safe.
A concerned mother spoke out, 'Why is there nothing in place? This is not a new problem that just occurred'.
Experts agree student input is key in preventing gang activity in schools. Their concerns and ideas need to be a part of the conversation had by the school, parents and law enforcement.
