Bug Creek Fire threatening community north of valley

A brush fire that has burned one-tenth of a square mile in Yavapai County prompted to the evacuation of 10 to 15 homes on Tuesday.

Bureau of Land Management spokesman Delores Garcia says the evacuation was ordered, in part, because the blaze was moving quickly through brush. Evacuated residents were directed to a nearby high school.

The fire has grown to an estimated 1000 acres as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction experienced several closures in both directions due to the fire. As of 9 p.m. both directions are open, but northbound is restricted to one lane.

The cause of the fire, which was reported at 7:45 a.m., hasn't yet been determined.

Late Tuesday evening residents evacuated were allowed to return to their homes.

Multiple air tankers and crews from BLM, Arizona State Forestry, and several community fire departments battled the blaze. A total of 225 personnel were called to fight the fire.
