1 arrested, 1 on the run after allegedly crashing stolen car

In a strip mall parking lot near 35th Avenue and Camelback, Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers and Phoenix police sift through the wreckage of someone's now-damaged car.

It was stolen from a Phoenix home on Sunday, which is something one trooper found out earlier when he spotted the car driving erratically around 2:30 a.m.

The trooper ran the plates and tried pulling it over, but the driver wouldn't stop, instead, he led him on a pursuit and eventually crashed the car into a light pole.

The two men inside took off running into a nearby neighborhood.

"The helicopter came overhead and the driver would make his way through the perimeter and was actually observed by the trooper running from the scene towards the west," a law enforcement spokesman said. "That's when Phoenix police officers engaged him and took him into custody, and he made numerous admissions to being the driver."

The suspect was taken to a hospital as a precaution. DPS says he was intoxicated and despite an extensive search of the area, the passenger wasn't found.

It's still unclear what role, if any, the two men played in stealing the car in the first place.
