13-year-old bicyclist hit and killed by suspected 17-year-old impaired driver

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A 13-year-old boy riding his bike home from school was hit and killed by a suspected impaired driver.

Phoenix police officers responded to the area of 19th Avenue and west Broadway Road for a traffic collision involving a bicyclist and vehicle. Authorities say witnesses told officers they saw a vehicle traveling south on 19th Avenue cross over the north bound lanes, striking the bicyclist as he rode on the sidewalk.

The victim has been identified as Cordell Gooch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash and police say the driver displayed signs of impairment.

The suspect's identity and charges are pending until the toxicology reports come back, and investigators reconstruct the collision scene.
