2 dead, several injured in wrong-way crash on State Route 347

Authorities say two people are dead and several others were injured in a wrong-way crash along State Route 347 near Maricopa on Monday night.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash happened in the southbound lanes Riggs Road on Monday night when a northbound-traveling gray Hyundai sedan, driven by 70-year-old Karen Ankiewcz of Sun City West, hit a Chrysler 300 head on.

Both Ankiewcz and the driver of the Chrysler 300, identified as 26-year-old Julissa Torres of Maricopa, were pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS says a man and 4-year old child, who were passengers in the Chrysler 300, were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

A 1-year-old infant was also in the vehicle during the collision but was not injured.

A third vehicle, a white Pontiac sedan, hit the Chrysler 300 following the initial collision with the wrong-way Hyundai sedan. The male driver and a 13-year-old passenger were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

A 15-year-old teen who was a passenger in the vehicle was not injured.

DPS says the wrong-way driver was alone in the vehicle and it's unknown if impairment or a medical issue were factors in the crash.

The roadway was reopened early Tuesday just before 4 a.m.
