Arizona reports 790 more COVID-19 cases; hospitalizations up

Arizona health officials on May 30 again reported a large number of additional COVID-19 cases.

The Department of Health Services reported 790 additional cases with 18 additional deaths as of Saturday, increasing the total number of cases statewide to 19,255 and the total number of deaths to 903.

The department on Friday had reported 702 additional cases and 28 additional deaths.

The number of people hospitalized because of COVID-19 also continues to rise, with 975 as of Saturday, up from 931 as of Friday.

Hospitalizations hovered around 700 people a month ago.

The increases are being reported in the wake of increased testing and of Gov. Doug Ducey’s lifting of some lockdown orders that closed many businesses and other establishments.

Ducey has said Arizona’s health care system can care for any virus patients and has enough hospital beds and ventilators available.

He announced Thursday that schools can reopen after summer break and youth sports can resume immediately.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
