Authorities catch man who shot Spotsylvania Co. K-9

Authorities have apprehended a man accused of shooting a Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Department K-9. The dog, Dux, was critically wounded but deputies said Tuesday that the dog is expected to make a full recovery.

Dux was shot Sunday night after an officer pulled over a car on Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. The suspect, 34-year-old Joseph Conway, was riding in the car, and as the vehicle's driver was taken into custody, Conway got out of the passenger's side and got into a fight with a deputy.

Dux was chasing the suspect, who ran from the scene, when he was shot. Sheriff Roger L. Harris said Conway was finally taken into custody Monday night in Richmond, where he was hiding in a hotel. He was found with a weapon, and Sheriff Harris said he was recovering from a leg wound and a gunshot. He was treated and released from the hospital, and is now being held without bond.

Harris said this situation is a classic example of why more K-9s are needed in law enforcement.

Dux was released from the animal hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
