Body cam footage released after CMPD officer shoots and kills armed man

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Body cam video relating to the deadly shooting of Danquirs Franklin by a CMPD officer last month has been released Monday to the public.

Judge Donnie Hoover ruled in April that the video would be released to petitioners at 12 p.m. Monday, April 15 and to the public around 2 p.m. the same day.

Family members reviewed the video before it was released, authorities said.

In the body camera video you can see CMPD Officer Wende Kerl and another fellow officer telling the suspect, Danquirs Franklin, to drop his weapon multiple times. In the video you see Franklin pulling the weapon away from his body when he is shot.

Franklin is heard saying in the video, "You asked me to...," before collapsing.

The shooting happend outside Burger King, located at 2601 Beatties Ford Road in March. Witnesses who called 911 said Franklin engaged in a fight with an employee before leaving the restaurant. Both 911 callers indicated Franklin had a gun. App users click here.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, Franklin was armed and officers repeatedly ordered him to drop his gun before he was shot. Franklin was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

The officer involved in the shooting, Wende Kerl, was placed on administrative leave per CMPD protocol. Internal Affairs and SBI were also investigating.

CMPD released two different 911 calls related to the shooting. The recordings have been edited, as required by state statute, to alter each caller's voice and remove any personal information such as name, address, and telephone number.
