DPS: Carjacking suspect shoots at troopers; pursuit ends in wrong-way crash on I-17
CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Southbound I-17 near Munds Park has reopened following a police pursuit that ended in a wrong-way crash near Camp Verde.
Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety Col. Frank Milstead tweeted out Sunday morning that police were pursuing a carjacking suspect that was firing at Trooper's as well.
Reports say the suspect was originally driving recklessly in a red mustang southbound on I-17 and he collided with a vehicle.
The suspect then carjacked the white GMC truck and fled from the crash scene with a rifle. Troopers pursued the vehicle where they were then shot at. Fortunately, no one was hit by the gunshots.
The suspect was in a white GMC truck driving northbound in the southbound lane of the I-17. He collided head on with a semi-truck.
While Col. Milstead tweeted earlier that the suspect died, DPS says he was flown to a hospital for life-threatening injuries. The tweet has since been deleted.
The victim driver in the semi-truck was transported by ambulance with minor injuries.
I-17 SB is closed at milepost 317, near Munds Park, and it's unknown when it will be open again.
