Ex-con to be sentenced in deadly Mesa shooting rampage

PHOENIX (AP) -- An ex-con man will be sentenced after pleading guilty to killing one person and wounding five others during a crime spree in Mesa last year.

Ryan Elliott Giroux is scheduled to have a sentencing hearing Friday afternoon in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Giroux pleaded guilty in April to first-degree murder and 22 other charges including kidnapping and armed robbery.

During the plea hearing, a judge stated that Giroux's sentence would likely include life in prison without a chance for parole because of the murder conviction.

Prosecutors decided not to pursue the death penalty.

The March 2015 spree began at a motel where three people were shot, continued with the shooting of another person at a nearby restaurant and ended after two people were shot at apartment complexes.
