Man dies in Mesa officer-involved shooting

One man has died in an officer-involved shooting following a stand-off in Mesa.

Mesa Police officers responded to the area of McKellips and Lindsay after receiving a 911 hang-up call from a person calling for help.

When police arrived, they encountered a man and woman walking in the community in the area. Police say the woman walked toward officers and was taken into a home by a man who appeared agitated.

The man went back inside the home and came back out with a weapon, and a nearby witness heard officers yelling to the man to drop the weapon.

Police say the man raised the weapon toward officers, and one officer opened fire. The male suspect crawled back into the home, leading to a barricade situation. SWAT members who got inside the home found the man deceased inside.

Police have identified the man as 53-year-old Michael Fletcher, and the weapon turned out to be a BB gun.

No officers were injured in the incident. The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
