Man found dead on road near Mesa

Just after 2:30 a.m., the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department along with Mesa police, responded to the area of 99th Street and University for multiple calls of shots fired.

"When sheriff's deputies arrived on scene, they found a white truck with a door open and a male victim who had been shot," Juaquin Enriquez of MCSO said. "He was laying right next to the truck."

That man, 29-year-old Shawn Mashburn, was taken to the hospital where he later died.

"He's a 29-year-old white male, we believe he lives here in Mesa," Enriquez said.

Deputies say they aren't sure why the victim was in the area, or who was responsible for the crime.

"We do believe there was some type of illegal activity going on," Enriquez said. "It's not 100 percent sure, that's why we're trying to piece all of the pieces of the puzzle together right now."
