MCSO: 50 dogs found living in horrific conditions inside East Valley shelter

MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Sheriff's deputies say dozens of malnourished dogs were found living in horrific conditions inside an East Valley animal shelter.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the dogs were found early Friday morning at the Shelter Paws animal shelter near 88th and Main Streets.

Authorities say over 50 extremely malnourished dogs were found inside the shelter. The dogs had been neglected and some were covered in feces.

One dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian in extremely poor condition and later died. Another 52 dogs were taken to the MCSO Safe Haven facility in downtown Phoenix.

"I want to first thank the individual who came forward," said Sheriff Paul Penzone. "These dogs are now in our care and we will ensure they have the opportunity to be brought back to full health. It's heartbreaking to see animals in this condition, and our investigators will seek charges as appropriate in this case."

MCSO says the owner of the shelter, Domenic Anthony Asprella, could face animal abuse charges.
