The Brief

    • The Pentagon identified the person who went missing in the recent attack on a Jordanian air base as Sgt. Angel Rampersad.
    • The 28-year-old from Ozone Park, New York, is believed to have died.
    • Eighteen U.S. service members have died since the beginning of the Iran war.

The U.S. Department of Defense released the name of the soldier who was missing after the attack on a Jordanian air base that killed two other service members and indicated that the sergeant is believed to be deceased.

Big picture view:

On Tuesday, the Defense Department identified the soldier as Sgt. Angel Rampersad and it explained that the 28-year-old, who was originally listed as missing after the July 17 attack, had likely died in the assault.

What we know:

Rampersad hailed from Ozone Park, New York, and was a member of 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command, according to the Defense Department statement. 

What we don't know:

The U.S. military has released few details about the nature of the attack by Iran other than that ballistic missiles and drones were utilized.

The backstory:

The Pentagon released the names of the other two soldiers killed in Friday’s aerial assault on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, identifying them as 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas.

Several other service members were also injured in the attack. The military had previously said that "unidentified remains" were found Sunday and were being examined.

Dig deeper:

Rampersad’s death is the 18th overall since the start of the Iran war and the fifth announced by the Defense Department in recent days. 

In addition to the three lost in the attack in Jordan, Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton was killed on Saturday while a "controlled detonation" was being conducted on a downed Iranian drone.

The Defense Department also stated that U.S. Navy pilot Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards had died in a helicopter crash earlier this month.

Their deaths were the first since the opening days of the conflict with Iran, during which 13 service members were killed.
