National Park Service searches for 71-year-old man missing near Canyonlands National Park

MOAB, Utah - A 71-year-old man was reported missing after he was last seen in Salina, Utah, earlier this month, and National Park Service officials are asking the public for help locating him.

Patrick J. Trier was last seen Aug. 16 and may have camped at Goblin Valley State Park or near Moab before arriving at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead in Canyonlands National Park on Aug. 17, the National Park Service said.

Rangers were notified of an overdue party on Aug. 22. NPS law enforcement officers found Trier’s maroon 2004 Toyota RAV4 at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead the following day.
Trier is described as a white man with long brown hair and a mustache. He is about 6 feet tall with a medium build and has an atrophied right arm. Officials said he was likely wearing jeans and a blue hat and carrying a small black-and-gray backpack.

The National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and Wayne County Search and Rescue are conducting air and ground searches. Officials said the rugged terrain, daytime temperatures in the high 90s and the strenuous Horseshoe Canyon hike have complicated the effort.
