North Carolina shooting: 2 dead after planned fight escalates

Two people are dead after a planned fight at a park in North Carolina escalated into a shooting, police said Monday.

What we know:

Winston-Salem Police said on social media that a fight involving "two young individuals" happened just before 10 a.m. local time. 

They had agreed to meet at the park, which is near a middle school, and the situation escalated "significantly," police said, leading to multiple people exchanging gunfire. 

Several people were shot, including two fatally, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

What we don't know:

The ages of those involved haven’t been given, and the names of the deceased also have not yet been released. It's also not known yet if anyone else was hurt in the shooting.

It’s unclear if those involved were students at the nearby middle school. 

Investigators are still looking into how many people were involved, and if they may be suspects, victims or witnesses. 

What they're saying:

"Due to the number of people involved, efforts are ongoing to account for everyone. At this time, some of those involved in the incident are juveniles," the Winston-Salem Police Department said
