Over 11,000 Ford pickups recalled due to a possibly counterfeit component

The Brief

    • Ford issued a recall for 11,405 of its 2026 Rangers over a component problem affecting the truck’s rear-view camera.

Ford is recalling thousands of its 2026 Ranger pickup trucks over an issue with the backup cameras that may affect nearly half of them.

Big picture view:

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report shows 11,405 Ford Rangers built between April and September of this year were included in the recall. It estimates the issue, which affects the rear-view camera’s display, could affect 47% of them. 

Why you should care:

The report states that drivers could get a blank screen, instead of a view of what’s behind them, when they put the truck into reverse. The automaker blames the problem on a power loss that traces back to a cracked multi-layer ceramic capacitor. 

Dig deeper:

According to Ford, an analysis determined that the capacitor, which was supplied by Suzhou Dongshan Display, has a dissipation factor that falls outside of specifications, and it suspects that it may be counterfeit components.

So far, the company knows about 15 warranty claims in North America related to the issue. The report noted, though, that Ford has not been alerted to any accidents or injuries that have come as a result of the problem. 

What you can do:

The company says it does not have a fix at this time. When it does, owners will be able to bring their trucks into a service center for a replacement. Ranger owners can currently search the NHTSA database to determine if their truck is included in the recall, and Ford indicated that it will begin notifying customers in early October.
