Pet CPR classes prepare animal lovers for emergencies
PHOENIX - Being prepared to save a life is what this CPR class is all about, and in this case the lives saved are those of your furry family members.
"We found the need in our community. We're all about education, so we wanted to offer some CPR first aid classes to help all our animal lovers jump in and help their pets," said Dana Klose, director and marketing manager at Heidi's Village.
Why you should care:
Heidi's Village is holding these training classes to help pet parents be prepared in case of an emergency.
"You never know when an emergency is gonna strike, and we want them to be set up for success," Klose said.
What Pet Owners Should Know:
There are some differences between CPR for humans and for our pets. Kate Klasen with H.E.L.P. demonstrated CPR for your dog on her Dalmatian Bishop.
"This is what I usually do to show people how it would look on a real dog. We can just assume we did our emergency assessment, and now I go and step in and do CPR. It's nice to have my demo dog, this is where my hand placement is gonna be. I'll check and see if there's any reflex. If I don't see anything, I'll start doing CPR. I can bring this all the way back and that's where you're gonna put your hand placement. Then I'm gonna do CPR," Klasen demonstrated.
How Pet CPR Works:
This is not in place of taking your dog to the vet, but it's the first line of defense before taking your dog to the emergency room.
"I'm gonna split up my compressions. It's just like human compression, where I wanna lock my elbows and then two breaths and I wanna use that body weight, a third to that chest width to be that mechanical aid, and then I'm gonna breathe right into their nose, form a tight seal on the mouth, breathe right into the nose. And that's where it's difference for animals versus humans, because I have to bend down. If I were to bend that neck, then I'm cutting off the airway," Klasen said.
What's next:
Heidi's Village is holding more CPR classes on August 29 and September 19.
