Phoenix VA hospital boss testifies at state Legislature

Almost one year ago the Phoenix VA Medical Center was accused of keeping secret waiting lists to disguise actual wait times.

The Phoenix VA interim director says the numbers show that things have gotten better.

"In primary care we have increased the number of veterans seen by 13%... in mental health we have increased the number of veterans seen by 29%, which is a large number," said Interim Director Glen Grippen.

And the Phoenix VA has also added 320 full-time employees to its staff.

When the scandal broke, management at the medical center came under fire after whistle-blowers came forward.

The interim director wouldn't answer many of FOX 10's questions, but told the Senators this: "I respect the law for whistle-blowers. I certainly encourage all employees to speak out. The only way we can get better is by listening to our veterans and our staff, and be dedicated to making those improvements," he said.

With the President set to visit this Friday the interim director said "We are going to have an opportunity to share with him some of the positive things that are happening at the Phoenix VA."

President Obama will be joined by Secretary of Veteran Affairs Robert McDonald.

The President is expected to arrive in the valley after 11 a.m. Friday, he is expected to depart hours later around 3 in the afternoon.
