Surprise of a lifetime: Valley family of 6 gets free air conditioning units for home

PHOENIX (FOX 10) - Many times, waiting for an appliance to be installed is less than thrilling, but today, the Nelson family couldn't be more excited for their delivery.

That's because they've been without air conditioning since September.

"The stress of knowing that we needed to do something by March in order to make living here feasible was really weighing on us, it was a very heavy weight," Sommar Nelson said.

Life threw the Nelsons a few curveballs this year -- John lost his job and without insurance, medical bills from an urgent procedure started piling up.

With triple digits just around the corner, the family needed a miracle and that's exactly what happened.

"Today is super special for our company," said Erin Robert with AAA Cooling Specialists. "This is the first time of being able to give back to our community, so our installers, everyone in the office, is so excited to watch."

Brought together by Lutheran Services of the Southwest, AAA Cooling Specialists stepped up to help the Nelsons by donating two AC units valued at more than $15,000.

Mom Sommar says she was speechless when she got the call.

"It was, um, a shock and it was such a blessing and I think I sat on the phone with Erin for about five minutes because I didn't know what to say," she said.

As a music teacher, Sommar says it would have been nearly impossible to continue private piano and voice lessons in her home without cool air.

But thanks to the generosity of many, things are finally looking up for the Nelsons.

"It was almost like, you know what, we're going to be able to make it another couple months because I honestly don't know how we would have been able to do this," Sommar said. "We probably couldn't have."
