Tempe Police: Two women drove car into canal, possible intoxication

At 8:30 a.m., Tempe Police received a call from a witness saying there was a car in the canal near Center Parkway and Washington Street.

When officers arrived on scene, they saw two females, the driver and passenger, by the canal.

"Both occupants are out and one was transported to the hospital with superficial injuries and precautionary measures," said Sgt. Alan Akey with Tempe Police.

Police then tried to piece together the initial information.

"Limited information from them. There were apparent signs of intoxication in this incident," Sgt. Akey said.

Sgt. Akey says the first priority when arriving at a scene like this is to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for. Next, the investigation begins.

"We'll do a collision investigation into the actual collision, and then if impairment is a factor, we'll do that investigation as well," Sgt. Akey said.

He adds that it was extremely helpful to have had a witness call the police and report the incident.

"We're very grateful that there was a witness who was able to, when they saw something, contact us so we could respond and make sure that everybody was ok," Sgt. Akey said.
