Chychrun completes hat trick in OT, Coyotes beat Ducks 3-2

Jakob Chychrun scored his third goal 1:47 into overtime and the Arizona Coyotes came back to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on April 4.

It was the first career hat trick for Chychrun, who scored on a long wrist shot through traffic.

Chychrun is tied with Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse for the league lead in goals by a defenseman with 12, matching his career-high in 25 fewer games than he needed last season. However, he doesn’t believe his shot is as effective because of a change of equipment.

"It’s funny ’cause I don’t want to sound ridiculous, but I switched sticks this year and actually I don’t find I shoot the puck as well compared with the ones from last year," Chychrun said. "I’m working on it and trying to tweak a few things, but I am trying to find lanes and get pucks through."

Adin Hill made 18 saves for the Coyotes, who swept the two-game set after winning 4-2 on Friday. Arizona has won five of six.

"We kind of just stuck with it and got one late there, then a big goal in overtime to get us two points," Coyotes center Nick Schmaltz said. "Heck of a road win and we needed that one bad."

Sam Carrick and Derek Grant scored, Trevor Zegras had two assists, and the Ducks went 2-4-2 in the season series.

"Tonight, I thought we did a decent job. It just got away from us a little bit," Carrick said.

John Gibson made 28 saves, including stopping Clayton Keller’s penalty shot 1:41 into overtime, in his return after missing three games because of an upper-body injury.

Chychrun tied it at 2-all at 15:09 of the third period with a wrist shot from the slot through traffic. He had six goals in eight games against the Ducks.

"He hit the holes tonight," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "Those were three major league shots. Double-digit goals for us, I mean, as a defenseman in 30-something games so he’s having a hell of a year for us."

Carrick, who made his season debut after being recalled from the AHL earlier in the day because of injuries at forward, put the Ducks up 1-0 at 8:31 of the first period. Zegras stole Jordan Gross’ pass behind the Arizona net and fed Carrick in the slot for a one-timer.

Chychrun tied it up 27 seconds later, firing a wrist shot from the right circle over Gibson’s right shoulder.

Grant put the Ducks back in front 2-1 at 14:47 of the first, getting in front of Hill to tip in Zegras’ shot from the high slot.

It was the first multipoint game for Zegras, the ninth overall pick in the 2019 draft.

"We’re trying to put him in situations where he can have success, so it’s good to see him be rewarded tonight because he played an excellent game," Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said.

RARE FEAT

Chychrun is just the second defenseman in Coyotes history to record a hat trick. Ed Jovanovski did it on Nov. 3, 2010, but it never happened in the team’s previous iteration as the Winnipeg Jets.

Chychrun is also the eighth defenseman to complete a hat trick in overtime. Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler, who was a minus-two, was the last to do so on Nov. 4, 2018.

STREAKS EXTENDED

Schmaltz and defenseman Alex Goligoski had an assist, the fourth for each during a four-game streak. Schmaltz also extended his point streak to five games, with two goals and four assists in that span.

MISSING MEN

The Ducks were without several of their top forwards as Rickard Rakell, Ryan Getzlaf and Troy Terry did not play because of upper-body injuries. Rakell, who has seven goals and a team-high 15 assists, missed his third straight game. Getzlaf was hurt against Arizona on Friday. Terry is day-to-day, the team said.
