ESPN suspends host Jemele Hill after tweets

ESPN has suspended host Jemele Hill after her tweets calling for fans to boycott the advertisers of the Dallas Cowboys if owner Jerry Jones forced his players to stand during the national anthem.

In a written statement, ESPN said:

"Jemele Hill has been suspended for two weeks for a second violation of our social media guidelines. She previously acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down with an impulsive tweet. In the aftermath, all employees were reminded of how individual tweets may reflect negatively on ESPN and that such actions would have consequences. Hence this decision."

"This play always work. Change happens when advertisers are impacted. If you feel strongly about JJ's statement, boycott his advertiser," Hill tweeted on Sunday with a link to a tweet featuring several of the Cowboys' advertisers.

The tweet was in response to Jones saying his players would respect the flag, and if they didn't, they wouldn't play.

Hill had previously called President Donald Trump a "white supremacist." The president later demanded an apology for the tweet.

After Hill's tweets about the president, ESPN released a statement that read: "The comments on Twitter from Jemele Hill regarding the President do not represent the position of ESPN. We have addressed this with Jemele and she recognizes her actions were inappropriate."

In regards to her tweets about the president, Hill later tweeted "My comments on Twitter expressed my personal beliefs. My regret is that my comments and the public way I made them painted ESPN in an unfair light. My respect for the company and my colleagues remains unconditional."
