Professional athletes lend helping hand to the Valley homeless community

PHOENIX (FOX 10) - A group of former and current professional athletes came together in Phoenix to provide hope and inspiration to some of the homeless people in the Valley.

It was all part of the annual Champions for the Homeless event at St. Vincent De Paul, serving meals and entertainment to 1,000 homeless men and women,

Some of the biggest names in sports were on hand to help those who need it most including NFL hall of fame member Nick Lowery, Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald, and super bowl legend Jim McMahon.

The homeless guests were also treated with flowers and gift certificates.

"This is giving back to the people that have had bigger injuries than any of us have ever had, with love and with acceptance, that's what Champions for the homeless is," said Nick Lowery, NFL hall of fame member.

Fox 10's Richard Sanz was also there to lend a helping hand. More than 400 volunteers took part in the event.
