Arizona weather forecast: Cool temps on MLK Day in Phoenix

Another week of cold conditions across the state and country!

An arctic air mass has dropped across the United States, bringing extreme cold to much of the country.

What we know:

In Arizona, our temperatures will be impacted by the pattern. A Freeze Warning is in place for Mohave and La Paz Counties from Monday night through Tuesday morning for temperatures falling as low as the teens and 20s.

A Freeze Watch, which will likely be elevated to a Freeze Warning, is also in place for Maricopa, Pinal, La Paz and Yuma Counties from Tuesday night through Wednesday morning.

Temperatures in the Valley will slip into the low to middle 30s by Wednesday morning. In northern Arizona, lows will fall to single digits and teens in the next several mornings with wind chills below zero Tuesday morning.

A few spots may see actual temperatures below zero in parts of Coconino, Apache and Navajo Counties.

By the numbers:

The cold snap brings mild afternoon temperatures, too. Highs in the middle 60s are forecast Monday, low 60s Tuesday, and upper 60s Wednesday. By Thursday into the weekend, highs will rebound into the low 70s.

Winds will strengthen Monday afternoon and evening, and remain gusty through the night and into Tuesday morning.

The stronger winds will gust up to 30-40+ mph in Northern Arizona, and 20-30 mph in Phoenix. The windy weather, coupled with the cold air, will create uncomfortably cold wind chills around the state on Tuesday morning.

What's next:

Expect a slight warm up toward the end of the week and into the weekend.

Over the weekend, there is the possibility a storm system will move across the region. This system has the potential to bring rain and snow showers to the state with increased winds and another round of cooler air. It's too early to be certain if the storm will bring full impacts to Arizona, but we'll monitor and update in the days to come.
