Woodbury Fire continues to grow as crews work to contain it

TONTO NATIONAL FOREST, Ariz. (FOX 10) - Officials with Tonto National Forest say that the Woodbury Fire has grown to 10,090 acres.

The fire, which was reported on Saturday, is burning just east of the Superstition Mountains near Superior.

As of late Thursday morning, the fire had grown to 10,090 acres, and the Type 1 Incident Management Team had assumed management of the fire.

Forest officials say the fire is still burning within the forest boundary. Fire activity is expected to increase with the heat.

Fire officials say the fire has been difficult to fight because it's burning in an area that's steep with rough terrain and thick brush. Meanwhile, a community meeting on the fire was held Wednesday night.

"It's just that you look out, and you see this huge mass of smoke coming from the fire, that's a little concerning," said John Williamson, who joined more than 100 other people worried about the fire.

"We live in the furthest community east, and we can still see it in the morning," said Jack Jackson. "It's quite a way's away, and they're doing a good job."
