New poll shows growing majority of Americans want Iran war over ‘now’

The Brief 

    • A recent poll from the University of Maryland found that 57% of Americans want the Iran war to end "now."
    • Nearly 40% of respondents in the poll support reparations for Iran because of the war.
    • A small number of Americans believe the United States is winning the Iran war.

The University of Maryland released a new poll that shows a rising number of Americans are calling for an end to the Iran war "now," with an increasing openness by people toward reparations to Iran for damage from the conflict. 

This latest poll comes after the university released two consecutive polls on July 17–19, and July 20–26. Results of the first poll revealed that 52% of Americans wanted the war to end "now," compared to just 24% of respondents who acknowledged that such objectives should be pursued even through war. 

Growing majority of Americans call for end to Iran war ‘now’

The new poll reveals that in late July 57% of Americans, including Democrats and Republicans, called for an end to the war now, compared to 52% who shared the same sentiment in mid-July.

Approximately 27% of respondents admit in the poll that the United States should undertake military action if its objectives have not been met, including 59% of Republicans, 5% of Democrats, and 19% of independents. 

More Americans support reparations for Iran 

Big picture view:

Researchers in the University of Maryland poll asked respondents whether the United States should be responsible for reparations to Iran for damages caused by the war. 

Support for reparations increased from mid to late July with 36% of Americans saying that the U.S. should be responsible for reparations.

The poll found that among Democrats, support for reparations jumped from 50% to 58%, while support among Republicans soared from 7% to 13%. And for independents, support increased from 31% to 36%. Meanwhile, almost 25% of respondents said, "I don't know," down slightly from 27% the previous week. 

Only a few Americans think the U.S. is winning the Iran war 

Local perspective:

Only 16% of respondents said the "US has already won or is winning," including 35% of Republicans, 5% of Democrats, and 12% of independents. 

Compared with mid-May, the poll noted that the number of Republicans holding this opinion dropped by 4 percentage points, while the number of Democrats rose by 4 percentage points. 

Approximately 40% of people said, "neither side has won or is winning," including 30% of Republicans, 50% of Democrats, and 44% of independents. In comparison to mid-May, the number of Republicans holding this view increased by 6 percentage points (24% to 30%), while the number of Democrats fell by 6 percentage points (56% to 50%).

Most Americans think war is illegal 

The other side:

According to the poll, Americans were asked if they believe the war was legal or illegal under US law. And 42% said the war was illegal under US law, including 11% of Republicans, 69% of Democrats, and 48% of independents. 

Compared with mid-July, the number of Democrats holding this stance rose slightly, from 66% to 69%. Roughly one-third of respondents said the war was legal under US law. Approximately 66% of Republicans held this view, while support among independents grew by 8 percentage points to nearly 25%. Additionally, only 9% of Democrats said the war was legal under US law.
