Deadly shooting on I-10 in west Phoenix resulted in hours-long shutdown

Phoenix Police are investigating a deadly shooting on Jan. 15 that resulted in a freeway closure for some time.

The shooting, according to officials, happened along Interstate 10's westbound lanes.

Timeline:

In their statement on Jan. 16, Phoenix Police said officers were called to a shooting that happened on the I-10, just after 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 15. Later on, they contacted a man who was detained by DPS troopers at a parking lot in the area of 75th Avenue and the I-10.

The man, per the statement, called 911 and acknowledged his involvement in the shooting, and led troopers to where he was at.

As for the victim, he was identified by police on Jan. 16 as 26-year-old Erian Sandoval. He was declared dead by fire crews who responded to the scene.

What we know:

Detectives say the victim and the suspect were driving west on the I-10 when they got into a confrontation.

"This led to the victim being shot and subsequently crashing into the median barrier of the freeway," read a portion of the statement.

As for the other man involved in the incident, police say he was interviewed and released, pending additional investigation. 

What we don't know:

Investigators have not identified the person who allegedly fired the shot, Also, the men's connections to each other, if any, remain unknown at this time.

What led up to the shooting is also unclear at this time.
