Family identifies 2 victims of fatal Phoenix shooting

Desert West Park is where the shootout took place, near 67th Avenue and Encanto.

Police responded to the shooting around 9:45 Tuesday night while dozens were enjoying the evening.

Investigators say there is no motive, and no suspects. Now the friends and family of the victims are speaking out.

"This was one rapid sound that was the same pitch; that's when it clicked to me that it's gunshots and people were running," said Jordan Bello.

Instead of running away, Jordan Bello said he ran towards the scene that was unfolding in the parking lot at the park in Maryvale. Three men had been shot, two of them were fighting for their lives.

"My first thought was to try to calm them down, try to keep them conscious," said Bello.

Family members identified the victims as 20-year-old Alberto Garcia and his older brother 24-year-old Oscar Garcia.

"My cousin died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, and my other cousin died during surgery," said Lily Cortez.

"All of us are just shocked, all of our family, we cannot believe we lost two brothers in one night," said Arturo Garcia.

Phoenix Police say a fight broke out, and the two groups exchanged gunfire. Police recovered over two dozen shell casings.

"We have located one weapon that was on the deceased that was here at the scene; we are missing a weapon that we believe someone took from here," said Sgt. Trent Crump.

"To see him go like this is just painful," said Fabian Hernandez.

Hernandez lit candles in memory of the third victim, who he identifies as a 24-year-old father. Miguel Retana was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's ruthless, it's senseless, but it's the world we live in, the world we created," said Hernandez.

Those who were there were shocked innocent bystanders weren't hurt, and they are hopeful things will return to normal at the usually peaceful park.

Police say witnesses saw two dark colored vehicles leave the scene. They're asking anyone who was at the park last night who hasn't already spoken to detectives, to reach out to the Phoenix Police Department.
