GOODWIN FIRE: Containment numbers growing, state forestry officials say

Firefighters are steadily gaining an upper hand on the Goodwin Fire, which has burned over 20,000 acres in an area south of Prescott, near the town of Mayer.

According to tweet made on the Arizona State Forestry Twitter page, the fire is 43 percent contained as of Thursday evening, with movement being slowed after the fire hit two burn scars.

On Thursday afternoon, forestry officials said the fire was 25 percent contained, citing numbers given by an Incident Commander.

According to information released by fire officials Thursday afternoon, the fire has charred approximately 24,828 acres of land, and 752 fire personnel are involved.

As of Thursday, the following communities are still under mandatory evacuation, according to fire officials:

State Route 69 was reopened between Cordes Junction at I-17 and State Route 169, according to ADOT.

Late Thursday night, officials with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office announced that evacuations for properties in Poland Junction, on the east side of State Route 69, will be lifted.

On Thursday night, officials held a community meeting in Prescott to provide updates, and some of the residents at the meeting said the new containment figures are giving them hope about what is to come.

"They seem to have it very well under control," said one woman.

Others, however, have questions on when they could return to their home.
