Mesa police: Bomb threat suspect shot, no officers hurt

MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - This morning, a "bomb disposal robot" went to work on an unknown object left behind by the suspect in an officer-involved shooting.

The commotion caused neighbors to evacuate, and nearby Lincoln Elementary School to be put in a "modified lockdown" state. Parents of students say they can't believe the situation.

"Never happened before, something like this no, it's different things that happened, but not like this," Jaime Garcia said.

According to Mesa police, at about 4:30 this morning officers responded to an order of protection violation. The male suspect was not allowed at the residence and was confrontational when police arrived.

At one point, the suspect threatened to "light a bomb" and that's when police say a Mesa officer shot at the suspect, resulting in non-life threatening injuries.

Because of the bomb threat, the officer-involved shooting investigation had to be halted.

"As soon as the scene is safe and the object has been removed and that part is gone, then officers do the investigation at the scene of the actual incident that occurred," Det. Nik Rasheta said.

Even though the suspect is not on the loose, parents say it's still concerning.

"I'm still scared," Garcia said. "I know now that police already have that man, but you know it's impossible to not be scared."
