Nearly 6 million French press coffee makers sold at Target, Walmart and other major retailers nationwide are being recalled following dozens of reports of burn injuries.

What we know:

Bodum is recalling approximately 5.9 million of its French press coffee makers after reports that the replaceable glass carafes in certain 8-cup and 12-cup models unexpectedly cracked or shattered during use.

Dig deeper:

According to a recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the glass carafes can break when consumers use metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee, posing a burn hazard from hot liquid.

By the numbers:

There have been 70 reports of the glass breaking, with 48 people reporting burn injuries.

The recall includes Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya French press coffee makers equipped with replaceable glass carafes.

Most affected coffee makers feature the Bodum name on the frame and inside the lid, along with engraved product warnings on the glass carafe.

Why you should care:

Consumers are urged to stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee inside the glass carafes and contact Bodum to receive a free plastic stirring spoon and warning label.

Big picture view:

The warning label reminds consumers not to use cracked or damaged carafes and warns against stirring coffee with metal utensils, which could cause the glass to break.

The affected coffee makers were sold through Amazon, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide.
