Officials: Martha McSally may have accepted excessive campaign contributions

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Election Commission says Arizona Sen. Martha McSally may have accepted $270,000 in campaign contributions that exceeded legal limits.

Federal candidates can collect $2,700 from a single donor during a primary election and an additional $2,700 from the same person during the general election.

But the FEC this week flagged dozens of contributions to McSally that appear to exceed those limits.

A McSally spokesman says the campaign is reviewing the matter and will return any excessive contributions.

This is just the latest FEC scrutiny for the former congresswoman. A 2018 agency audit found she previously failed to keep accurate records and also accepted excessive contributions.

McSally lost to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema during last year's midterms, but was appointed to finish the remainder of Sen. John McCain's term.
