FAA investigating near plane collision over Phoenix
A United flight from San Francisco and a Delta flight from Detroit came within 425 feet of each other in the sky, according to flight radar data. NTSB guidelines say planes should always stay at least five miles apart. Both airlines say automated collision warnings were triggered on both flights.
PHOENIX - Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration say they are investigating a weekend incident involving two airliners at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.
Per a brief statement, the incident happened at around 11:00 a.m. on Jan. 11, and it involved United Airlines Flight 1724 and Delta Air Lines Flight 1070. According to the website Flightradar24, United Flight 1724 originated from San Francisco, while Delta Flight 1070 originated from Detroit.
"United Airlines Flight 1724 and Delta Air Lines Flight 1070 landed safely after experiencing a loss of required separation when they were inbound to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport," a portion of the statement reads. "Both flight crews received onboard alerts that the other aircraft was nearby."
FAA officials also state that air traffic control "issued corrective instructions" to the flight crews of each aircraft.
