Police are trying to piece together what happened behind closed doors, leading up to what appears to be the murder-suicide of a husband and wife on Monday night.

Four children were home at the time of the shooting and one of them called 9-1-1 to say their mother and stepfather had argued and gunshots were heard.

The children are between the ages of 1 and 15 years old. They were not hurt in the shooting and have been placed with local family members.

Omar Lopez lives next door and watched as police tried to make contact with the couple before entering the home near 63rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.

"It seems like they were trying to talk to the guy out. They were saying come out," said Lopez.

When they didn't get a response, officers made entry by breaking through the front window. The bodies of a married couple, 34-year-old Oliver Olague-Acosta and 33-year-old Iveth Susana Chavez were then discovered. Police say the husband shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.

"We're having a hard time trying to figure out what happened. We never seen anything that would trigger something going on," said Alex Huerta, a neighbor.

Lopez added, "Probably won't even know what happened to him. Why did he do this to his wife in front of his kids?"

Family members returned to the home the next morning. The father of the woman who was killed told FOX 10 he was too distraught to talk about the tragedy.

Investigators have not released a motive for the murder-suicide.
