The Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons are mourning the loss of former defensive end Allen Bailey, who passed away at 37.

Big picture view:

A 10-year NFL veteran, Bailey spent his first eight seasons with the Chiefs after being drafted in 2011 out of the University of Miami. In 2019, he signed with the Falcons as a free agent and played in all but one game for the team over the next two seasons before leaving the league after the 2020 campaign.

What they're saying:

"Our hearts go out to his family," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said about Bailey at the beginning of a scheduled Wednesday news conference. "Our prayers are with him. Way too young obviously. One of my favorite players. Great kid. Just sorry to see that happen to him."

"Allen Bailey was an excellent teammate, generous man, and kind soul," the Chiefs wrote on their Facebook page. "We're deeply saddened to hear of his passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

The Falcons also posted a tribute to Bailey, writing, "Rest in peace, Allen Bailey 🙏 We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

The backstory:

No official cause of death for Bailey has been made public. Bailey’s wife is reported to have found him dead on Tuesday at their home in Florida, according to an account from Bailey’s brother, Alford Bailey Jr., to TMZ. The website added that the family believes his death was the result of natural causes.

By the numbers:

Bailey played a total of 133 games in the NFL, playing in at least 14 games in three of his first four seasons in Kansas City, as well as in his final four campaigns, which were split between the Chiefs and the Falcons. In that time, he tallied 234 tackles and recorded 22 sacks.
