DPS: Two people now dead following trooper-involved shooting in Flagstaff Wednesday night

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (FOX 10/AP) - Authorities are investigating a shooting involving an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper in Flagstaff.

According to a statement posted on the DPS website Thursday afternoon, the incident happened at around 7:42 p.m. Wednesday, when a DOP trooper tried to stop a 1990 black Isizu Amigo SUV for a traffic violation. The driver yielded and stopped at a gas station on Kaibab Lane at first, but after the trooper left his patrol car, the driver fled the scene, in the SUV, at a high rate of speed.

The suspect, officials say, then drove into a nearby residential area, where he and a passenger fled on foot. The trooper coordinated a search perimeter, and other troopers, along with Flagstaff Police officers and a DPS helicopter, assisted in a search for over an hour.

"I saw the helicopter in the sky for a good 40 minutes," said Christina Cantu. "I saw a lot of police coming down my street. I saw police that were kind of surrounding a vehicle down my street, a lot of troopers coming. The helicopter was in my area and I heard the gunfire."

At 8:44 p.m., officials say, a homeowner called 911, and reported seeing the suspects in the area. The suspects were located in front of a home on Topeka Avenue less than 10 minutes later, and as troopers approached both suspects, one of the suspects, identified as 20-year-old Marcus Gishal of Flagstaff, pointed a handgun towards the troopers and fired, striking one in the left hand. Troopers then returned fire, striking Gishal, who was declared dead at the scene. The other suspect, identified as 20-year-old Preston Oszust of Flagstaff, was also struck by gunfire.

On Friday, DPS officials said Oszust has died of his injuries.

The trooper who was hit, according to DPS, was taken to the hospital for treatment and then released.

DPS officials say Gishal and Oszust both have a history of arrests, and Oszust has an active felony warrant for a probation violation. An investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Cantu said she was worried about her family.

"At that point I told my daughter to get on the floor," said Cantu. "I got on the floor really worried about crossfire, after the shooting stopped, I got up and saw the trooper coming out from betwen two houses that are directly across the street from me."
