Small plane crashes into Atlantic off Boca Raton coast; pilot unhurt, police say

A pilot was rescued after their small-engine plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Boca Raton, Saturday morning. 

Boca Raton Police, who responded to the Aug. 22 crash around 10:25 a.m., reported the pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was not injured. 

FOX News reported the pilot was rescued by a lifeguard – who helped bring the pilot safely back to shore.

Where did the crash occur? 

What we know:

A Piper PA30 aircraft, on its way to South Bimini Airport in the Bahamas, crashed in the ocean about two miles east of Boca Raton Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. Boca Raton police assisted with the crash in the area of 250 S Ocean Boulevard. 

The plane departed from Page Field in Fort Myers, the FAA said. 

According to FOX News, the plane was set to make an emergency landing at Boca Raton Airport before it crashed into the water. 

Pilot transported to hospital

Police reported the pilot was transported to an area hospital as a precaution.

What's next:

The Federal Aviation Administration is leading the investigation. Boca Raton Police reported Saturday afternoon the plane was scheduled to be removed from the water on Sunday morning. As of Sunday afternoon, the FAA had not released further details on the recovery operation.
