Valley non-profits gather for volunteer fair in Downtown Phoenix on Sunday

PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- If Downtown Phoenix seems extra busy this coming Sunday around the Van Buren, it's because the music venue will be holding a volunteer fair that involves more than a hundred non-profit organizations.

According to organizers, more than 2,000 people showed up to find out what their passion is back in 2017. The idea all came about from Charlie Levy, one of the owners of the Van Buren. He wanted to make a difference in some way, but had a hard time finding out which cause to champion for. So, he came up with this idea.

From the City of Phoenix to One Community, the list of organizations needing volunteers goes on and on.

"Almost like a matchmaking, speed-dating sort of type of event, where we found a lot of people were interested in volunteering, but maybe don't know how to get involved, or 10 commitments most organizations require," said Alison Sipes, Director of Events for Downtown Phoenix Inc.

The leader of One Community, an LGBT rights non-profit organization, says working as a volunteer can lead to more unexpected experiences and opportunities.

"It was such a rewarding experience for me personally, that I eventually became a donor, ultimately became an employee, but it all started with volunteering for something that I'm passionate about," said Janine Skinner, Engagement Director for One Community. Her passion stems from the fact that she has two LGBT kids.

Organizations participating at the fair say volunteers do truly make all the difference, especially for non-profits. The fair will take place on Sunday, at the Van Buren music venue, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. From music and arts, to health and hospitals, non-profits from all over the Valley will be at the fair.
