According to Northern Territory Police, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received a report that a vehicle had been swept off the Victoria Highway in the Manbulloo area.

Police from Katherine and members of the Northern Territory Emergency Service were sent to the scene and quickly organized a rescue operation. A nearby Heli-Muster R44 helicopter assisted in the effort, landing on top of the partially submerged vehicle and airlifting the two men and their dog to safety.

Authorities described the situation as extremely dangerous. Incident Controller Emma Carter warned that flooding can become life-threatening very quickly.

"This was a life-threatening situation that goes to show just how quickly these flood waters can turn dangerous," Incident Controller Emma Carter said. "I would like to commend the actions of all those involved as you have almost certainly saved three lives."

The rescue came as severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain across the region, prompting the Bureau of Meteorology to issue several major flood warnings.
