A Maricopa County Board of Supervisor says three people vying to become interim sheriff have changed their political affiliations from Republican to Democrat. It comes as the board needs to appoint an interim sheriff of the same political party as Paul Penzone, a Democrat.

Arizona is becoming an abortion battleground state after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. On Saturday, Jan. 20, hundreds of people marched to the Arizona Capitol demanding abortion rights.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers are pushing a new tax agreement, and parents, along with U.S. companies, may come out as winners, if the plan is passed. Reporter Rebekah Castor has more.

The so-called "tamale bill" has advanced out of committee with a number of changes. Arizona law allows the street sales of what are known as "cottage foods", but the bill seeks to add certain cooked foods, like tamales, to the list. Last year, Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed the bill despite it passing with a majority of support from both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate. She now sounds more optimistic about the possibility of signing the new bill. "My team is actively engaged on it and I'm looking forward to getting a bill that I can sign," Hobbs said. The measure must be debated and approved by the full House and Senate before making it to Hobbs' desk.

Advocates for the LGBTQ+ community spoke at the Arizona State Capitol on Jan. 18 in support of House Bill 2625, the Statewide Non-discrimination Act that was introduced in the state legislature.
