If you’re staying at an Airbnb, your list of after-stay chores just got shorter.
Airbnb updates guidelines
Dig deeper:
After complaints from guests who were tasked with various chores before checking out but still had to cough up a cleaning fee, Airbnb has decided to rewrite what hosts can ask of visitors going forward.
Beginning Nov. 20, the vacation rental company will limit what hosts are allowed to ask of guests once it’s time to leave the property.
Airbnb’s "reasonable house rules and requests" website states hosts should set any rules and requests of their guests "as long as they are reasonable and comply" with the requirements set by the company.
Guests should not perform certain cleaning duties
Big picture view:
Airbnb explained that guests should not be required to complete tasks that "require significant effort or time."
Tasks that should be completed by a cleaner, including stripping the bed, taking trash off-site, or washing dishes, should not fall to the guests.
Additionally, hosts must include add-on fees for amenities within the listing price upon the time of booking.
Hosts must also provide all house rules and requests on the listing and can’t add or change those rules or requests after booking has been completed.
The new guidelines apply to all Airbnb rental properties, including internationally.
