ASU replaces iconic palm trees

TEMPE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A piece of Arizona State University history is going away with the wind.

Crews are replacing the palm trees which line the university palm walk, because the trees are nearing the end of their life span.

It's widely said that in 1916 then ASU's President John Matthews planted the Mexican fan palm trees.

ASU workers will replace the trees with date palms which the university plans to harvest and sell. The replacement trees will be about 18-20 feet high and grow up to 80 feet high when matured.
