Dig deeper:
Police at the scene say it was an 18-year-old boy who died. As investigators piece together what led up to the shooting, the teenager's family is seeking justice.
"His name is Jervarious Tyler," said Kimberly Younkins, the mother of the 18-year-olf victim. "They took my baby. They killed my baby. They killed him."
Younkins waited behind crime scene tape after learning her son was shot and killed.
"He tried so hard to graduate. He succeeded. He didn’t deserve this. I don’t know what happened," Younkins said. "They killed my baby. 18 years old. He didn’t even get a chance at life yet. He was getting ready to start trade school. He was doing good. He was a loveable person. If you knew him you would be like, this is a great kid, you know?" Younkins said.
Local perspective:
Neighbors say this violence is a shock in this quiet neighborhood.
"There’s never been any disruption or anything in the past," one neighbor said.
"I’m kind of shocked. Usually we don’t get usually have problems like this. I mean, I can’t remember another thing like this happening in the 32-3 years that I’ve been here," another neighbor said.
Phoenix Police's Crime Scene Unit has been on the scene as the investigation continues. Multiple teenagers have been seen waiting with police, but it has not been confirmed if any of them are suspects, or if police have any suspects in custody.
"I want justice to be served and whoever did this, I want them to go but it wasn’t no one there but the so-called friends and girls you know? It wasn’t a wild party. It wasn’t a lot of people there," Younkins said. "Somebody at that place knows what happened."
