Crews on June 26 battled a brush fire that sparked near 313th Avenue and Baseline Road. The fire burned about 20 acres and temporarily forced people out of nearby homes. All evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes Monday night.

June 26, 2023 marks the 33rd anniversary of a deadly wildfire near Payson. The Dude Fire broke out in Walk Moore Canyon in 1990, and the fire destroyed 60 homes, and charred over 24,000 acres of land before it was contained. Six people died as a result of the blaze, including inmate firefighters and a guard from the State Prison in Perryville.
