Cambridge police: Gunman terrorized motorists in shooting rampage that left two people injured

A Boston man is in custody after Massachusetts police say he started randomly firing rounds from an assault-style rifle on a busy roadway in Cambridge. 

The gunman fired as many as 60 shots within a few moments, putting dozens of people driving, walking, biking and rowing in danger. 

The investigation

What we know:

Police say they received a call saying that a man, later identified as Tyler Brown, 46, was seen in Cambridge acting erratically. Boston police reported that he was also armed with a rifle. 

Officers from both Cambridge Police and Massachusetts State Police arrived at the area of Memorial Drive in Cambridge, just after 1 p.m. When they arrived, they saw Brown in the middle of the road randomly shooting at vehicles as they drove by.

According to Cambridge Police, two people in two separate vehicles were struck by gunfire. 

A state police officer and an armed civilian approached Brown, who began shooting at them. The trooper and the civilian both returned fire, hitting Brown and ending the threat. 

Dig deeper:

Brown is currently in the hospital being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Once released, he’ll likely be facing two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and firearm offenses. 

The two gunshot victims are also at the hospital, being treated for life-threatening injuries.
