Retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle’s North Carolina home was burglarized last week, sheriff’s deputies said, weeks after Biffle and his family were killed in a plane crash.
The burglary happened a week before a public memorial service to remember Biffle, his wife and kids, and the others who died in the fiery crash a week before Christmas. You can watch the memorial live here at 11 a.m. EST Friday.

What we know:
According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, the burglary at the Biffle home in Mooresville was reported Jan. 8. Investigators said someone broke into a safe at the home, stealing $30,000 in cash, a backpack, some guns and some memorabilia. No one was home when it happened.

What we don't know:
No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made, officials said.

The backstory:
Biffle, 55, was among seven killed along with his wife, Cristina, and children Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, when the plane crashed near the airport in Statesville, North Carolina, according to authorities. Others on the plane were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.
The Cessna C550 burst into flames when it hit the ground shortly after it departed Statesville Regional Airport. The plane crashed while trying to return and land, authorities said.

Federal regulators are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Biffle drove for 18 years and was named by NASCAR as one of its top 75 drivers in history. He was a Hall of Fame nominee for the stock car series. He drew headlines last year with tireless humanitarian efforts as a helicopter pilot supplying aid in the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene.
